Aluminum Alloy 5000 Series

Aluminum Alloy 5000 Series

5000 series are aluminum alloyed with magnesium and are non-heat treatable. Magnesium is a widely used alloying element in aluminum alloys and is often the primary alloying and sometimes used in combination with manganese. The addition of magnesium gives the alloys improved strength over the 1000 series while still offering good weldability and formability, and the series alloys have the highest strength of the non-heat treatable alloys. They also provide superb corrosion resistance and good fatigue strength. For these reasons, they are used for a wide variety of applications that require strength without sacrificing corrosion protection. Typical uses include boat hulls, storage tanks, pressure vessels, and construction materials. However, there should be certain restrictions on the use temperature of the alloys in this series containing high content of magnesium—alloys in this series with more than 3.0% magnesium are not recommended for elevated temperature service above 65 °C, or 150 °F to avoid sensitization and subsequent susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking.
