Gold is metallic, with a yellow color when in a mass, but when finely divided it may be black, ruby, or purple. Gold is found in trace amounts in all igneous rocks. Its abundance in the Earth's crust is estimated to be approximately 0.005 parts per million. Except for tellurium, selenium, and bismuth, it occurs mostly in its native state, remaining chemically uncombined.
Gold is soft and is the most malleable and ductile element; one ounce of gold can be drawn into 80 kilometers of five microns, or five millionths of a meter, thick gold wire. It is a good conductor of heat and electricity and is unaffected by air and most reagents. In addition, gold is highly reflective of heat and light.

Applications
In addition to chief applications in coinage, ornaments and jewelry, gold can be used in the following applications:
- Textile industry.
- Gold flake is used as a radiation-control coating for spacecraft.
- In electronic tubes, such as gold-plated grid wire, to give high conductivity and suppress secondary emissions.
- Gold powder and gold sheet is used for soldering semiconductors, with gold having a good ability to wet silicon at 371 ℃.
- Gold is used as a plating material, where sodium gold cyanide is used as a gold plating solution. The plating has good chemical resistance and electrical properties, however the plating lacks wear resistance, in which case gold-indium plate is utilized.
