Aluminum Alloy 6000 Series

Aluminum Alloy 6000 Series

6000 series alloys contain magnesium and silicon to improve their strength. Magnesium and silicon added to aluminum can produce magnesium silicide (Mg2Si) compound, which makes these alloys heat treatable for improved strength. Thus, the magnesium and silicon proportion in this series is exactly the proportion required for formation of magnesium silicide. The series are one of the most versatile heat-treatable aluminum alloys. In addition to improved strength, they also have good formability, good weldability, good machinability, and excellent corrosion resistance. However, they should not be arc welded autogenously (without filler material) because these alloys are naturally solidification crack sensitive. These alloys are found widely throughout the welding fabrication industry, used predominantly in the form of extrusions, and incorporated in many structural components. Typical applications include transportation equipment or building exteriors.
