Lanthanum-Based Alloys

Lanthanum (La), the first element of the lanthanide series, is a silvery, ductile, malleable rare-earth metal. Like other light lanthanide elements, Lanthanum crystallizes in the double hexagonal close-packed (dhcp) phase at ambient conditions. Lanthanum is relatively common in the Earth's crust. Its abundance is thought to be as high as 18 parts per million. That would make it nearly as common as copper or zinc. Lanthanum is a very active metal which reacts with most acids and with cold water, although slowly. Lanthanum also reacts with oxygen in the air, especially in moist air.

Lanthanum-based alloys are compounds that combine Lanthanum with other metal elements. For example, lanthanum can be used in hydrogen sponge alloys which are capable of storing up to 400 times their own volume of hydrogen gas in a reversible adsorption process.

Alfa Chemistry provides high-quality rare earth alloys at a competitive price. Lanthanum-based alloys we can supply including lanthanum-nickel (La-Ni) alloys, lanthanum-cerium (La-Ce) alloys, lanthanum-aluminum (La-Al) alloys, lanthanum-iron-palladium (La-Fe-Pd) alloys. We can customize various shapes of lanthanum-based alloys according to your requirements or drawings.

Applications

Lanthanum-based alloys have various applications, for instance:

  • Lanthanum-nickel (La-Ni) alloy (LaNi5) can be used as a catalyst for the synthesis of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). It can also be used for hydrogen storage applications.
  • Lanthanum-cerium (La-Ce) alloys are mainly used in Ni MH battery production and can also be used in hydrogen storage alloy, low-performance NdFeB material, and flint.
