In general, magnesium alloys show lower mechanical performance in comparison with other metal alloys. Grain refinement and precipitation strengthening are the two primary methods to improve the strength and ductility for magnesium alloys. Hence, commercial magnesium-zinc-zirconium (ZK) alloys were designed and are widely used. The ZK series magnesium alloys have good strength and ductility due to zinc addition for precipitation strengthening and zirconium addition for grain refinement. While with increasing content of Zn, ZK series magnesium alloys become more susceptible to solidification cracking. Because of the good casting properties, hot working properties and corrosion resistance, ZK series magnesium alloys can be used in aviation, aerospace, transportation, chemical industries. Apart from structural applications, it has been reported that the ZK series magnesium alloys are promising for biodegradable implants applications because they have slower corrosion rates.
