As a one of the so-called platinum group of metals, osmium is a bluish-gray metal which occurs uncombined in nature and also in the mineral osmiridium (an alloy with iridium). Most osmium is obtained commercially from the wastes of nickel refining. Osmium is unaffected by water and acids, but dissolves with molten alkalis. It is the densest of all the elements and is twice as dense as lead. However, the use of osmium also had some disadvantages: it is expensive, and the processing is difficult because osmium is very brittle and cannot be processed into long threads. Of the platinum metals, osmium is the most rapidly attacked by air. The powdered metal, even at room temperature, exudes the characteristic odor of the poisonous volatile tetroxide, OsO4.

Alfa Chemistry provides high-quality precious metals at a competitive price. Osmium products we can supply are in the shape of powder. We can also customize various shapes of Osmium products according to your requirements or drawings.

Applications

Osmium is an extremely hard and durable metal, which has a hardness score of 10 on the Mohs scale, which makes it one of the hardest known elements in all of the world's periodic table. Common applications of osmium include:

  • As an abrasive and polish.
  • To produce very hard alloys for fountain pen tips, instrument pivots, needles and electrical contacts.
  • In the chemical industry as a catalyst.
  • For its high-temperature applications, where it can withstand temperatures that are as high as 1,500 degrees Celsius.
  • For radiation protection and materials detection.
