Aluminum Alloy 7000 Series
7000 series alloys are aluminum alloyed with zinc and can be precipitation hardened to provide the highest strength of all commercially aluminum alloys with the strength even higher than low-carbon steel. Some other elements, such as copper, magnesium and chromium, are also added in small quantities in these alloys. They also have good wear resistance and weldability, satisfying corrosion resistance, excellent fatigue properties, and sufficient fracture toughness, but exhibit reduced resistance to stress corrosion cracking and poor formability. Formability is affected by the hardening effect on the metal when heated during welding or forming operations. Usually, these alloys often utilized in a slightly overaged temper to provide better combinations of strength, corrosion resistance, and fracture toughness. Superior strength makes 7000 series alloys the first choice for heavy commercial applications such as aircraft, aerospace, and competitive sporting equipment.
