Commercial magnesium-aluminum-zinc (Mg-Al-Zn) alloys are so-called AZ series magnesium alloys which contain about 1-10 wt.% Al, with Zn content being less than Al. Among the magnesium alloys, AZ series alloys are well-known for their abundance, general purpose use and reasonable material cost and are extensively used for weight reduction in automotive and aircraft applications. However, corrosion continues to be a great concern and a main issue affecting the implementation of all of these alloys. And self-corrosion and passivation decrease with the increasing Al content. Commonly, both the heat and cryogenic treatment can improve the mechanical and corrosion properties of the AZ series magnesium alloys.
