Description

AZ91E
MAGNESIUM ALLOY

Magnesium alloy AZ91E is a general-purpose gravity sand casting alloy containing aluminum, zinc and manganese. AZ91E is a high-purity alloy with excellent corrosion resistance and high tensile strength and moderate yield strength. The alloy can be used in aerospace casting applications particularly where there is no high temperature requirement or a requirement for pressure tightness. In general, it has three common variations, AZ91E-F, AZ91E-T4 and AZ91E-T6. Alfa Chemistry focus on AZ91E-T4 and AZ91E-T6 alloys (in the T4 and T6 temper).

Material Forms

Magnesium alloy AZ91E we can provide is available in Forgings.

Weldability

Sand castings are weldable by the tungsten arc inert gas process (TIG) with a filler rod of a similar composition. Castings should be welded in the T4 or T6 condition and heat treated after welding. This may either be for 30 mins at 415˚C plus 4 hours at 215˚C or 16 hours at 170˚C.

Heat Treatment

For optimum properties the alloy should be used in the T6 condition i.e. 16 to 24 hours at 400˚C - 420˚C, air-cool, and then 8 to 16 hours at 180˚C to 210˚C. Alternatively it may be used in the T4 condition i.e. 16 to 24 hours at 400˚C to 420˚C.

Applications

Forgings in AZ91E find application in high strength parts for:
