Cerium-Based Alloys

Cerium (Ce), the most abundant of the rare earth metal, is an iron-grey lustrous metal, and is malleable and oxidizes very readily at room temperature, especially in moist air. Among rare earth elements, only europium is more reactive than cerium. Alkali solutions and dilute and concentrated acids attack cerium rapidly. And cerium oxidizes slowly in cold water and rapidly in hot water.

Cerium-based alloys are compounds that combine cerium with other metal elements. For example, alloying aluminum with cerium creates a highly castable alloy, compatible with traditional aluminum alloy additions, that exhibits dramatically improved high-temperature performance. Cerium-iron (Ce-Fe) Alloy is a metallic material composed of iron and cerium, which has high chemical activity and is hard and brittle.
