Beryllium is a hard, grayish metal that occurs naturally in over 100 different minerals most important of which are bertrandite, beryl, chrysoberyl, and phenacite. Beryllium is one of the lightest of all metals and has one of the highest melting points of any light metal. Although it is readily attacked by alkalis and nonoxidizing acids, beryllium rapidly forms an adherent oxide surface film that protects the metal from further air oxidation under normal conditions.
