Tungsten-Carbide Alloys
Description
Tungsten-Carbide alloys are composite materials comprised of individual tungsten carbide grains imbedded in a ductile metal binder matrix. The Tungsten-Carbide together with the binder forms the basic structure of the alloy from which other types of hard metals have been developed. Tungsten carbide comes in grades, depending on which binders have been used, which are commonly cobalt or nickel. In addition to the first Tungsten-Carbide of cobalt composition, the carbide may contain several percentages of titanium carbide, tantalum carbide and niobium carbide.
One of the most significant properties of tungsten-carbide is its extreme hardness. It measures 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, so it can withstand high levels of abrasion and wear and tear. In addition to being incredibly hard-wearing, Tungsten-Carbide is also an excellent conductor of electricity. They are widely used in applications that require superior wear or impact resistance, such as abrasives, cutters, dies and punches.
Alfa Chemistry offers a variety of tungsten-carbide alloys available in shapes of plate, rod, tube and foil. We also have extensive machining capabilities to provide weights in standard sizes or custom products finished to your required specifications.
