Cobalt is a brittle, hard, silver-grey transition metal with magnetic properties which is one of the three naturally occurring magnetic metals next to nickel and iron. When cobalt is combined with another metal to make an alloy its magnetic properties are even more apparent than the individual metal of cobalt. Cobalt is always found in the cobaltite, skutterudite and erythrite in nature. The element is active chemically, forming many compounds. Cobalt is stable in air and unaffected by water but is slowly attacked by dilute acids.
