Aluminum Alloy 2000 Series
2000 series are the aluminum alloys with principal alloying element of copper, often with magnesium as a secondary addition. These materials are known for high performance and excellent strength over a broad range of temperatures. These alloys require solution heat treatment to obtain optimum properties; in some instances, precipitation heat treatment is employed to further increase mechanical properties. And the mechanical properties are similar to steel, and sometimes exceed, those of low-carbon steel. However, their corrosion resistance is not as good as other aluminum alloys, and intergranular corrosion may occur under certain conditions. Aluminum alloys in the 2000 series find many applications, such as truck and aircraft wheels, truck suspension parts, aircraft fuselage and wing skins, structural parts. In general, they are very suitable for parts and structures requiring high strength-to-weight ratios and the parts requiring good strength at temperatures up to 150 °C (300 °F).
