Copper is a reddish-gold colored metal that is ductile, malleable, and an effective conductor of heat and electricity. It occurs naturally in the earth's crust and is found in the environment as a metal and in various minerals (e.g. cuprite and malachite). In some areas, concentrations range from less than 50 ppm to more than several thousand ppm. Most of the extracted copper comes from sulfide ores. Copper is commercially produced mainly by smelting or leaching, usually followed by electrodeposition from sulfate solutions.
The major portion of copper produced in the world is used in the electrical industries; most of the rest is combined with other metals to form alloys. Copper alloys are complex metallic formulations in which copper is used as the base material with different concentrations of alloying elements such as nickel, aluminum, silicon, tin and zinc to give the alloy the desired properties. Because of their high electronic conductivity, thermal transfer property, and corrosion resistance, copper alloys are generally used as lead-frame material and other electrical industry.
Types
There are as many as 400 different components of copper and copper alloys. The most well-known copper alloy families are bronze (copper-tin), brass (copper-zinc), cupronickel (copper-nickel) and (red) copper. These actually represent families of alloys, all made by varying the amount of specific alloying elements.
- Bronze: an alloy consisting primarily of copper, commonly with about 12–12.5% tin and often with the addition of other metals (including aluminum, manganese, nickel, or zinc) and sometimes non-metals, such as phosphorus, or metalloids such as arsenic or silicon.
- Brass: an alloy metal that is made of copper and zinc and often with the addition of other metals, such as lead, tin, aluminum, etc.
- Cupronickel: an alloy of copper that contains nickel and strengthening elements, such as iron and manganese.
- (Red) Copper: an alloy with a high copper content.
