Niobium, formerly columbium, is a rare, soft, gray-white metal with a high ductility at room temperature. It has a body-centered cubic crystalline structure, and it resembles the element tantalum in physical and chemical properties and performs resistance against many chemicals.
Niobium is commonly used as an alloying agent to produce high-temperature-resistant alloys or special steel. Superconductive wire can be made from an alloy of niobium and titanium or other metals like tin and aluminum which can then be used to make superconductive magnets. In addition, since its high level of biocompatibility niobium alloys has good use in surgery.
