Description
Bronze is one of the earliest metals known to man. It is defined as an alloy made of copper and another metal, usually tin, while arsenic, phosphorus, aluminum, manganese, and silicon can also be used to produce different properties in the material. All of these ingredients produce an alloy much harder than copper alone. Bronze is also more fusible (i.e., more readily melted) and is hence easier to cast. The properties depend on the specific composition of the alloy as well as how it has been processed. In addition, it has some typical characteristics:
- Brittle
- Highly ductile
- Easy to machine
- Unlike steel, striking bronze against a hard surface won't generate sparks
- Upon exposure to air, bronze oxidizes, but only on its outer layer
- Bronze exhibits low friction against other metals

Beryllium bronze, also known as beryllium copper is a metallic copper alloy with amounts of beryllium between 0.5% and 3%. It is the hardest and strongest copper alloy in fully heat treated and cold worked conditions. It combines high strength with non-magnetic and non-sparking qualities which make it widely used for non-sparking tools in the mining (coal mines), gas and petrochemical industries (oil rigs). Phosphor bronze, or tin bronze, is a bronze alloy that contains a mixture of copper with 0.5-11% tin and 0.01-0.35% phosphorous with many positive properties. - Aluminum Bronze
Aluminum bronze is made up of 6-12% aluminum, replacing the tin traditionally used in other types of bronze. It is an alloy with high strength, corrosion-resistant, and tarnish-resistant. Due to its corrosion-resistance, particularly to seawater, it is mainly used in marine hardware, and pumps that carry corrosive fluids. - Silicon Bronze
Silicon bronze is made using around 94-96% copper by weight, and the rest is typically 2.5-6% silicon and a mixture of other metals such as aluminum, zinc, lead, iron, manganese, and more. This combination creates an alloy that has higher strength than regular bronze as well as excellent corrosion resistance.
