Magnesium Alloy HM Series
Commercial magnesium-thorium-manganese (Mg-Th-Mn) alloys are so-called HM series magnesium alloys which contain, usually, 2-3 wt.% Th, with Mn content being less than Th. The role of Th in magnesium alloys is similar to that of RE which is to increase the creep strength of magnesium alloy at high temperature and to improve the casting performance of the alloy. And the adding of Mn shows some improvements in corrosion resistance and ductility. Thus, HM series magnesium alloys are with the properties of high strength, creep resistance at high temperatures, and light weight. And they can find a variety of applications in missiles, spacecraft, tanks, and its primary use is in the manufacture of aircraft parts, especially engines.
