Tungsten Wire

Description

Tungsten Wire

Tungsten is one of several metals commonly used to make electron emitters. Its advantage is extremely low vapor pressure even at high temperatures. Tungsten has the highest melting point of all the metallic elements and a density comparable to that of uranium or gold and about 1.7 times that of lead.

As a worldwide supplier of tungsten products supplier, Alfa Chemistry specializes in the manufacture and sale of high-quality tungsten wires. Our tungsten wires are free of scratches, kinks, and distortions. Surface finish is supplied in the black, as drawn condition, where drawing lubricants and oxides are retained on the surface or in the cleaned condition by firing in hydrogen or electrochemical etching.

Applications

Common Applications for tungsten wires include:

  • Furnace parts and high-temperature alloys. Due to high melting points and high strength, tungsten wires can be used in many high-temperature applications, such as arc-welding electrodes, heating elements and shields in high-temperature vacuum furnaces, and turbine blades in generators and aircraft engines.
  • X-ray targets. Tungsten has a high atomic number which increases the intensity of the x-rays at a set of voltage and current. Its high melting point also allows the x-ray anode to become white-hot.
  • Armor penetrator. Weapon energy is a function of the mass and its velocity when reaching the target (terminal velocity). The mass is dependent on the density, and the terminal velocity is dependent on both the density and melting temperature. Tungsten has both advantages.
