Description
Aluminum alloy 7050 is a heat-treatable alloy with zinc as main alloy element. The alloy is known as a commercial aerospace grade aluminum alloy combining high strength, high fatigue strength, high toughness, along with a high resistance to exfoliation and stress corrosion cracking. It has relatively poor weldability, and it is not recommended to use welding methods of brazing, gas shielded arc welding, or coated metal arc welding for joining. And it has poor cold workability, but can instead be machined. 7050 is particularly suited for heavy plate applications (3" to 6" thick) because it has less quench sensitivity compared to other aerospace aluminum alloys and can retain strength in thicker sections. Aluminum alloy 7050 plate is available in two tempers of T7651 (AMS 4201) and T7451 (AMS 4050).
