AISI 1020
UNS G10200
Description
AISI 1020 steel is a high-strength low-carbon steel that features good machinability, weldability, and ductility. As a result, it can be easily cut or formed without losing any of its strength or toughness in the process. However, due to its low carbon content and lack of alloying elements, it doesn't respond to many hardening processes like induction hardening and flame hardening except carburizing and will not respond to nitriding. So, it is normally used for low stress parts. Its common uses include light duty gears, camshafts, cold headed bolts, and general engineering parts and machinery. Furthermore, AISI 1020 steel is also used extensively in the food industry due to its non-toxic qualities and resistance to corrosion.
