444 Stainless Steel

UNS S44400

Description

444
STAINLESS STEEL

444 stainless steel is low carbon and low nitrogen ferritic stainless steel that contains 18% chromium and 2% molybdenum. The stainless steel offers excellent corrosion resistance combined with good formability and weldability characteristics. And it provides pitting and crevice corrosion resistance superior to most ferritic stainless steels. The alloy's enhanced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion combined with its good general corrosion resistance to a multitude of environments makes it an excellent choice for a wide range of applications such as heat exchanger tubing, food processing equipment, hot water tanks, and automotive exhaust. In addition, its low carbon content also makes it an excellent choice for food preparation as it does not leach harmful chemicals into foods when heated at high temperatures like some other alloys may do.

Additional Properties

Corrosion Resistance: Refer to NACE (National Association of Corrosion Engineers) for recommendations.
Cold Forming: Type 444 provides excellent formability and can be readily deep drawn and spin formed. Stretch forming, however, is limited in application for this alloy.
Heat Treatment: 444 stainless steel is non-heat treatable.
Welding: For best results refer to: SSINA's "Welding of Stainless Steels and Other Joining Methods".
