440A Stainless Steel
UNS S44002
Description
440A stainless steel is a high carbon martensitic stainless steel, which combines the superior corrosion resistance of chromium stainless steels with the excellent wear resistance of high carbon alloys. It also possesses good strength and excellent hardness, as well as magnetism in both the annealed and hardened conditions. The optimum corrosion and hardness will be obtained in the hardened and hardened and tempered condition. The combination of good wear resistance and high hardness makes this alloy an excellent candidate for cutting tools and knife blades. It also is often used for dental and surgical equipment.

Additional Properties
Corrosion Resistance: 440A stainless steel provides full corrosion resistance only in the hardened or hardened and stress-relieved conditions. Type 440A has good corrosion resistance to atmosphere, fresh water, foods, alkalis and mild acids.
Cold Forming: 440A stainless steel has limited formability in the annealed condition.
Heat Treatment: 440A stainless steel can be hardened by cold working and by heat treating.
Welding: For best results refer to: SSINA's "Welding of Stainless Steels and Other Joining Methods".
